Your recordings never leave your Mac. Apart from checking this website for
updates and for the beta's end date, Separ8 sends nothing unless you press a button that
says it will.
This page covers what the app and this website collect, why, and how to have it
removed.
Your recordings
Everything you record stays on your Mac, in the folder you choose. Separ8 has no account,
no cloud library and no upload. Nobody but you ever sees your recordings.
What the app sends
- Update checks. Once a day, Separ8 asks this website whether there's a newer
version. The request says which version of Separ8 you have. Updates are handled by
Sparkle, with its optional system profiling switched off.
- The beta's end date. A few times a day, Separ8 asks this website for the date the
beta ends, so the date can change without an update. Nothing is sent with the request.
- “How did that go?” After some recordings, Separ8 asks how it
went. Nothing is sent unless you press one of its buttons. If you do, it sends your
answer, the note if you write one, your versions of Separ8 and macOS, your Mac's model,
and a random ID for your copy of Separ8. The ID is made on your Mac and tied to nothing
about you. It only tells me when two answers came from the same Mac.
- Bug reports. “Report a bug” opens a form in your browser, run by
Tally, with your versions of Separ8 and macOS and your Mac's model already filled in. It
also copies diagnostics to your clipboard: your Separ8 settings and the names of your
audio and video devices, which can include your name (a phone called “Jane's
iPhone”, for example). If Separ8 crashed, the report macOS wrote about it is
included. Nothing is sent until you paste it and submit the form, so you can read it
first.
- Nothing else. No analytics, no tracking and no advertising, in the app or on this
website.
This website
- Your email. Downloading Separ8 asks for your email. I use it to tell you when
Separ8 goes on sale, to reach beta testers when something needs their attention, and for
notable feature updates. Alongside it I keep whether you signed up on a Mac, and where you came
from when the link said, such as a YouTube video. Your email is never sold, and never
shared with anyone except the services below that run this site.
- Your browser. This site stores two things in your own browser: that you've
already given your email, so you aren't asked twice, and where you first came from.
Neither leaves your browser except with your email when you sign up.
- Hosting. Like every website, this one sees your IP address when it sends you a
page. That's handled by the host, Netlify.
- The guide's video plays from Vimeo, set so it doesn't track you.
How long it's kept
Your email stays on the list until you ask to remove it, or until the list has done its
job and is deleted. Answers to “How did that go?” and bug reports are kept for
as long as they help make Separ8 better.
Your choices
You never have to answer “How did that go?” or report a bug. Update checks
can't be switched off during the beta, because they're how fixes reach you.
Changes
Separ8 can't be bought yet. When it can, the store will handle payment, and this page will
say what that involves before it happens. Whenever anything here changes, the date at the
top changes with it.
